Case scenario: amniotic fluid embolism.
A MNIOTIC fluid embolism (AFE) is a rare but potentially catastrophic obstetric emergency. Despite earlier recognition and aggressive treatment, morbidity and mortality rates remain high. An estimated 5–15% of all maternal deaths in Western countries are due to AFE. Recent retrospective reviews of population-based hospital databases in Canada and the United States found AFE incidences of 6.1–7....

AFE is an unpredictable, unpreventable, and, for the most part, an untreatable obstetric emergency. Management of this condition includes prompt recognition of the signs and symptoms, aggressive resuscitation efforts, and supportive therapy. Any delays in diagnosis and treatment can result in increased maternal and/or fetal impairment or death. Whereas once the invariable outcome of AFE was dea...

Amniotic fluid embolism is a rare, yet catastrophic event. In the United States it occurs in 1 per 20,000 to 30,000 births. This article presents a case study of a CNM's experience with a maternal and fetal death resulting from an amniotic fluid embolism. Pathogenesis and appropriate m...

We present a case of the successful treatment of severe amniotic fluid embolism in a 41-year-old woman undergoing emergency caesarean section at 36 weeks of gestation for placental abruption and intrauterine fetal demise. The treatment included prolonged cardiopulmonary resuscitation, emergency hysterectomy, re-operation with intra-abdominal packing and intra-aortic balloon pump insertion. The ...
متن کاملFatal pulmonary embolism by amniotic fluid.
Sudden death, during or just after labour, has only too often been attributed to " obstetric shock." Out of this aetiological obscurity, in 1941 and 1942, Steiner and Lushbaugh extracted one recognizable cause of death, the finding in the maternal blood vessels of amniotic material. Recognition of other cases has followed rapidly (see review by Sluder and Lock, 1952), but thus far only three re...
